What is the Difference Between Non-dairy and Dairy-free?
Many consumers are confused about the terms "Non-dairy" and "Dairy-free" when shopping for food products, especially when it comes to items like creamers, cheeses, and other dairy substitutes. This FAQ will clarify the differences, explain the regulatory background, and provide guidance on choosing the right product for your needs.
What does "Non-dairy" mean?
Definition: According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), "Non-dairy" products are those that do not contain traditional milk or cream but may still include small amounts of milk-derived ingredients, such as casein or whey (milk proteins). These ingredients can make up to 0.5% of the product by weight.
Purpose: The term "Non-dairy" was introduced by the FDA to distinguish dairy substitutes from actual dairy products like milk or cream. This regulation was established to prevent confusion between dairy-like products and actual dairy products.
Can People with Milk Allergy Buy Non-Dairy Products?
If you follow a vegan diet or have a milk allergy, it is important to avoid products containing "non-dairy creamer" and specifically seek out "dairy-free creamer" options.
